Excerpt

Candles

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

The grandmother was outside, looking for the first spring flowers and the girls were inside, speaking while putting their shoes on to join her.

Looking down to the floor from the top of her 6 year old height and then up again to her older sister, already 12 years old, an adult in her eyes, Maddie answered with a question: “Can I still be me?”

Followed by other questions:
“Am I not already who I am?   Will I be someone else then?  What will happen to me?  I thought I would grow and grow and grow like you did and still be me, just taller and older.  Like fruits hanging on trees.  They grow and grow and grow until we pick them and eat them.  Will a Giant eat me?  Is Death a Giant?” asked Maddie, opening her eyes and mouth, as would she be waiting to breath the answers in.

Shaking her head from right to left and back, while staring inside of Maddie’s brown eyes, Lucy answered:
“No Maddie, you will still be you, you can never be someone else.  We aren’t fruits.  No Giant will eat you, Maddie.   Death…I don’t know much about death.  But I don’t believe that Death is a Giant.  I mean, what would you like to work with?  Not ‘who’ do you want to be, but ‘what’ do you want to be?”

With an unemployed father and a mother who changed her work place every few months, now with a new provisional contract in a new office, this wasn’t an easy question for a 6 years old child.

“You mean, if I need to do the same thing for my whole life?  Will I need to do the same for my whole life?  The same thing every single day?”
“No, you don’t need to do the same thing for your whole life, but maybe there is something you would like to do at first?”
Lucy was getting upset with her younger sister.  Why couldn’t she answer a simple question?
